Today I will be reviewing "Falling Uphill" by "Lillix". "Lillix" is band that formed way back in 1997, when the members were kids/teens and also called "Tigerlily". At that point the band was "Louise Burns" (bassist), "Tasha-Ray Evin" (guitarist), "Lacey-Lee Evin" (keyboardist), and "Sierra Hills" (drummer). They later signed to "Maverick Records" in 2001 but changed their name to "Lillix" because there was band already called "Tigerlily". Then in 2002 "Sierra" left the band and was replaced by "Kim Urhahn". Their album "Falling Uphill" was released a year later in 2003 and I'm reviewing the album today. Here's my track by track review:
1) Tomorrow: The third and final single from the album. The song was co-written by "Linda Perry" who has written songs for "Christina Aguilera", P!nk", and "Alicia Keys", just to name a few. The song is an upbeat song about spending the day by yourself because everyone else is busy. The song was given a radio remix which sounds way better than the version on the album because it sounds like a rough demo. 7/10
2) Quicksand: "Louise" wrote this song. It's about cliques and stuff in high school that don't matter what you were in high school once you enter "The Real World". It's a pretty good song. 10/10
3) It's About Time: The first single from the album. The song could either be taken as a bittersweet relationship with either a boyfriend or your best friend. The song song peaked at number 17 on Japan top 20 chart, as well as being the only song on the album to chart. I love the song and it was later re-recorded as a bonus track on the Japanese version of their third album, "Tigerlily". 10/10
4) Dirty Sunshine: When I first heard the song I thought it sounded weird. Several listens later I thought, this track is cool. I think that lyrics talks about being in an unhappy relationship. It's very different from the first three songs but still a good song nonetheless. 10/10
5) Sick: This song is an upbeat pop/rock song about letting go of someone that makes you feel sick. In a way it can be seen as a continuation of "Dirty Sunshine". Another great song. 10/10
6) Invisible: This song was written by "Lacey-Lee". The song is about not wanting to feel invisible. It has a good message but the song sounds so weird and feels out of place on the album. 5/10
7) 24/7: This song was written by "Tasha-Ray". The song is a happy upbeat song that seems to be about being in a long distance relationship and waiting for that person to come back to you. I love the song and wish it was released as a single. 10/10
8) Because: This song was also written by "Tasha-Ray". It's an upbeat song about a person who never sees your side of an argument that they started. I don't really listen to the song much "because" it's a little forgettable. It's also the shortest song on the album being 2 minutes and 26 seconds. 6/10
9) Promises: Like the previous two songs, this song is written by "Tasha-Ray". The song seems to be about someone wanting the other person that regardless what happens in the future, that they'll always have each others backs. It's a pretty good song. 8/10
10) Fork in the Road: This song is written by "Lacey-Lee". I think the song is about someone who has trouble making their mind up about decisions. I'm likely wrong which is sad given that the song is one of my favorites on the album. If anyone knows what the song is about please leave a comment and tell me. 10/10
11) Lost and Confused: This song is written by "Louise". I don't listen to the song at all mainly because I don't listen to it. To me it's like "Because" where it's very forgettable. 6/10
12) What I Like About You: The second single from the album as well as the only cover song on the album. It was originally performed by "The Romantics". The song was originally recorded as the theme song to a show that was also called "What I Like About You". It was later put on the album as well as the 2003 remake of "Freaky Friday" which stared "Lindsay Lohan" who also appears in the video. Really great version of the song. 10/10
"Lillix" has released two albums since "Falling Uphill". They released their second album "Inside the Hollow" in 2006 with new drummer "Alicia Warrington" after "Kim" but the album was only released in Canada and Japan because their label "Maverick Records" went out of business. The group was also not picked up by "Warner Bros. Records" like other artists from the previous label. They would later release "Tigerlily" independently in 2010.
My favorite songs on the album are: "24/7", "It's About Time", "Fork in the Road", "Dirty Sunshine", "What I Like About You", "Sick", and "Quicksand". Out of 120 points I give the album 102 points which is 85%, a B.
Thank you for reading this review. I know it's not that good and I'll try to make better reviews in the future. Also check out "Lillix's" music if you haven't yet.
