Okay, I think we all knew that this album review was coming. As I've said many times before I'm a huge Avril Lavigne fan so reviewing her third album, "The Best Damn Thing" is no surprise. "The Best Damn Thing" was released in 2007, 3 years after Avril's second album, "Under My Skin" and was more upbeat and fun opposed to the dark, angry sounds of "Under My Skin". Here's my track by track review:
1) Girlfriend: The first single from the album. The song was a surprise considering she's telling a guy that she wants to be his girlfriend and to get rid of the girl he's with. Also she was married to Deryck Whibley from "Sum 41" at the time. The song surprisingly ended up being one of her most successful hits hitting number 1 in the U.S. I like the song now but when it was first released, I thought it was bad. 9/10
2) I Can Do Better: This song was Avril's favorite song on the album. Avril said while she was on tour that the song is about "being strong and doing better". I don't want to be mean, but it sounds like she is drunk in the song. I also found the third verse funny. 9/10
3) Runaway: This is my favorite song on the album. It's about how life can suck and how you just want to runaway from it all. That describes how life was for me in high school. Really wish this song was a single! 10/10
4) The Best Damn Thing: The fourth and final single from the album as well as the title track. When I first got the album, this song was one of the first songs I listened to. I loved it but when I saw the video I was horrified. Cheerleaders?!?! Avril's has definitely changed. I eventually got over it since the song was cool. 10/10
5) When You're Gone: We finally get to a ballad. This song was the second single from the album. The song talks about missing someone when they're far away from you. The video for the song is amazing. It made me cry. 10/10
6) Everything Back But You: This song is probably the most angriest song on the about. It is rumored that this song was an outtake from "Under My Skin". It makes sense because it not only does Avril's voice sound like it did on "Under My Skin" but it was also co-written and produced by Butch Walker, who co-wrote and produced some of the songs on "Under My Skin." While it doesn't fit the mood of the album, it's still a great song. 10/10
7) Hot: The third single from the album. When this song was announced as the third single from the album, I was shocked. I thought it was an okay song but a bad choice as a single. While the video was good, the song wasn't as successful as the first two singles from the album. 8/10
8) Innocence: Another ballad. This song was released as a single in Italy and apparently had a video. I didn't know that nor have I seen the video. Although Avril's vocals are amazing, I usually ignore this song. 8/10
9) I Don't Have to Try: "I'm the one, I'm the one who knows the dance. I'm the one, I'm the one who's got the prance. I'm the one, I'm the one who wears the pants." That's the opening line of the song. Clearly Avril's saying she wears the pants in her relationship. The song was also used in a canon camera commercial that Avril was in. 9/10
10) One of Those Girls: In this song Avril warns a friend that the girl who's hitting on him only wants him for money and when he's broke the girl will be gone. This was one of the first songs I listened to on the album. It is a little more rockier than some of the other songs but I still like it. 10/10
11) Contagious: Although it is the shortest song on the album, it is very upbeat. It is about seeing a guy that you feel is "the one". There was controversy with this song. Apparently in 2005 Chantal Kreviazuk wrote a song with the same name and thought Avril plagiarized the song. Although the case was settled, I am curious what the song Chantal wrote sounds like. 10/10
12) Keep Holding On: This song was a single for the "Eragon soundtrack". While the film wasn't successful, the song was. It was one of two songs Avril wrote for the soundtrack. While this song was included on the soundtrack the other song, "Won't Let You Go", didn't make the soundtrack but was leaked a few years ago. It is an empowering song and I love listening to it when I'm having a bad day. Avril had said that the song was going to have an alternate version for the album but for unknown reasons that didn't happen. Always wondered what the other version would've sound like. 10/10
Avril's third album, "The Best Damn Thing" was much more lighter and happier than her previous album and was just as successful. My favorite songs on the album are: "Runaway", "One of Those Girls", "The Best Damn Thing", "Contagious", "Keep Holding On", "When You're Gone", "Everything Back but You", "I Don't Have to Try", "Girlfriend", and "I Can Do Better". Out of 120 points I give the album 111 which is 92%, an A. Awesome, now I'll just wait until her sixth album comes because let's face it, when it's released I'll review it!
